As someone who at one point worked from a home-office full-time, I can say Im glad those days are over. Recently The DAN300 Group moved into a new office and we are still getting settled.

In fact next week we close for a small refurbishment and stock-take. That way we can start the new financial year fresh. The Style Tree luckily can be updated and researched from anywhere in the world, which is why these days so many people are continuing to work from home. ♣

If I had to do it again, I think I would have one of these amazing office pods, or mobile offices. Designers have pioneered the home office idea, researched the needs of the potential occupant and taken it to a new level.♥

Three major trade fairs are on simultaneously and its even more interesting for the DAN300 group as we exhibit in two locations and walk the halls of all three to see what is up and coming in the world of design.

Due to the week ahead we will be updating the site in a few days and will be bringing news fresh for the trade fair. First to open is the Life Instyle fair. More news coming soon…..

As a child of the 70’s there are certain things that remain etched in my brain. My dad as an architect spent many a night at the drawing board, an actual wooden board propped up at the back by two bricks, with real paper rolled out onto it and a collection of rulers and pens that would rival my current shoe collection. You see in those days architects actually drew all their plans by hand, measured things using mental arithmetic and had to get out the ruler to draw straight lines. ♣ who would have thought……..

Our study at home also known as Dad’s drawing room/study, mums sewing room, the poodle clipping table, my brothers model making room, my (imaginary travel agent – when I was 8), my bedroom for a few nights (when I was about 15), my major artwork room in year 12 and the shelves where all our cookbooks lived, it was also a hide away for all of my dads toys of the trade. The left hand drawers next to his drawing board were always filled with pens, pencils, very fine drafting pencils also known as pacer pencils and lots of paper stationary and a great collection of architecture books from the 60’s and 70’s. While I spent most of the 80’s insulting my dad because he is the man who embraced exposed brick and wood together in the same place in a house. I now know that like most things, certain fashions come back. And like all fashion it usually comes from something in the past.

I always smile when I see posters depicting advertisements from the late 60’s early 70’s, record album covers and in a few cases famous postage stamps. It reminds me of those days in the late 70’s early 80’s where I learnt alot about design, the years and styles past and a snap shot into what was new and fashionable in an era where I wasn’t a twinkle in someone’s eye.. Its funny how these things come around…..♥

♥ Funnily enough I still have all my dad’s rulers neatly tucked away in my stationary drawers and his original set square ruler (giant thing that it is) hanging on my wall in front of this computer Im typing on right now. You see its the process that some like not just the final destination and as the older generation keep saying..

it reminds me of a simpler time….♥

The Bergdorf Goodman Holiday window display is out of this world this year. Many years ago I was in NYC for my first ever white Xmas and I was stunned by the amazing window displays. This years Holiday windows at BG 57th Street store is like a trip to the MOMA. This years theme is ‘A Compendium Of Curiosities’ and the windows feature references to M.C Escher & Lewis Carroll along with Victorian elements, a touch of couture and pop culture. Im not sure what to look at first. If only I could see it with my own eyes..♥

What immediatelty came to mind was Bjork and from that came the thought… what does it mean to be or look icelandic? Besides being scandinavian Iceland is famous for a few things – ‘The Blue Lagoon’ being one. The hot 40·c pool of water is pale aqua in colour and looks very inviting – steam is seen rising from the water around the clock. Its rather mystical….It is also famous for soothing aching bones and muscles and helping with some medical condition. The art & culture scene is treasured and highly active and the city has a sophisticated yet quiet outlook. Here’s what we found on the research trip earlier today….

Snippets from the icelandic mood board…..♥

Ive been tracking this duo for some time now, its taken me a while to find out more about them. worth a trip to the website, it is a visual feast, full of colour and hard edge design.

Love the use of perspex and the collaboration of traditional textural elements, strong colourful graphics with a bold hard surfaced aura.. interesting mix for those who swing between styles.

Doshi Levien is a London based design office led by Jonathan Levien and Nipa Doshi. Nipa and Jonathan bring together two distinct and complementary approaches to their work. ‘While Nipa’s work is strongly influenced by Indian visual and material culture, Jonathan’s approach is rooted in design for industrial production. Together, their work celebrates the cultural hybrid and explores the synthesis between technology, story telling, industrial design and craftsmanship. Doshi Levien was established in 2000 and their work includes installation design for the Wellcome Trust, interaction design for Intel, insight and design direction for Nokia, product design for Tefal, furniture design for Moroso and bespoke shoes for London based “aristo” bootmakers, John Lobb.’ exert from their website.
